Jak na Nový rok, tak po celý rok

After the long night of celebrating the New Year in grand Czech style, New Year’s Day is usually spent with the family … recovering and thinking of the New Year. Along with this comes traditional Czech cuisine for New Year’s Day….lentils (Lens culinaris)!  Why lentils, you ask? Legends have it that they represent money and prosperity for the year.

So, one must have lentils to eat and plenty of them, please!

Done and Done!!! Welcome 2012!!!

It’s Miller Time! (from GQ)

After getting his footing in Barker Black, Kirk Miller stepped it up another notch with Miller’s Oath, a custom-suiting shop in Manhattan that he opened this year. Yes, it’s dandy-ish, but not Guy Ritchie wannabe-gangster-ish. “Iridescent lining?” Kirk says. “Not on the menu.” In other words, the style isn’t in your face. Saying something louder doesn’t mean you’re right.

How do you ID a suit by Miller? Reverse pleats, ticket pockets, belt-bucking side tabs, and a jacket that’s not too short, not too long. He’s also fond of fabrics that are a little heftier and can take a beating.

Miller’s ties are stamped with pickaxes, a reference to the general store his great-grandpap ran in gold rush-era South Dakota. “They’re hardcore,” he says, “but in a subtle way.”

The house shirt features a rounded spread collar, small enough to encourage a moderate-size tie and knot. “I really loathe those huge, thick knots,” Miller says.

It’s so great to see someone from my hometown do so well.  I have been following Kirk Miller from his days at Barker Black and before that I always looked up to him on the soccer field as a player that I would like to be like. A wonderful person and amazing designer, I wish him all the luck in the world! I will be sure to stop in and see the shop next time I am in NYC and let you know what I think! If you would like contact information for the store it is:

Thanks to @maryrambin for this recomendation of Atomic Tom @atomictom as I am always looking for new music! These guys are amazing and I agree with her that if they don’t come to LA I would fly to them just to see them in a small venue before they get huge!

This trailer makes me think of a movie that I would go to with my father. On sundays when we lived in the same state we would have movie Sundays. Sometimes it would be my choice and sometimes his, most of the time we would both want to see the film… I think that this would be one of them!

With the shift in media that we are starting to see, this is a fascinating look at the workings at what some might call the greatest paper in print… Coming out this weekend in select theaters!
